Cold rolled steel is a product manufactured by further milling of hot rolled steels at room temperatures in order to achieve lower thicknesses, better surface quality and tighter tolerances. The production process starts with pickling of hot rolled coils, followed by continuous cold milling to achieve a desired thickness. Inevitably, this milling process results in deformation hardening which emerges the need of annealing for softening the material and to make it gain its final mechanical properties.
Cold-rolled steel is used for a multitude of products ranging from home appliances like refrigerators and washing machines to industrial machinery, architectural components, automobiles and a variety of construction-related products. In other words, it is an indispensable material for our modern society. In order to protect material surface, cold-rolled steels are manufactured with a protective oil layer on their surface. Depending on the customer request, this oil level might be slight, light, normal and abundant. Steel mills prefer to use mostly the highest level of oiling for products that will be subject to international transport to hinder any possible corrosion issues in the long run.
For surface quality options, EN 10130 standard is applied.
This standard indicates 2 different surface qualities A and B.
Surface quality A:
Defects such as pores, slight indentations, small marks, minor scratches and slight coloring that do not effect formability or the application of surface coatings are permitted.
Surface quality B
The better surface shall be free from defects which might affect the uniform appearance of a quality paint or an electrolytic coating.
The other surface shall conform at least to surface quality A. Thanks to its international supplier network, BSSW provides cold-rolled coils of different grades, dimensions and origins for its customers. Please see Steel Service Center section for additional operations
