Galvanneal, Hot Dip Zinc-iron alloy coated steel (+ZF)
Production of galvanneal steels, requires a supplementary step of induction heating right after hot dip galvanization to create a diffusion alloying zinc and iron. Galvannealing is mostly preferred if the metal will be subject to painting, welding or forming.
The main property of zinc is its very slow oxidation rate which causes it to act as a long-lasting protective barrier against atmospheric corrosion as long as it remains on the steel core. Galvanneal steel surface is spangle-free, gray in color, and after proper cleaning it’s well suited for finish painting (and eliminates the need for prime painting). By offering superior resistance to corrosion and eliminating the need for prime painting, Galvanneal Steel reduces costs associated with special preparations, handling and maintenance of inferior materials such as Cold Rolled Steel.
Galvanneal steel surface qualities are produced in accordance with international standards in three different surface types A, B and C (best quality). In accordance with EN 10346 surface qualities are described as seen below.
Surface quality A:
Imperfections such as dips, scratches, variations in surface appearance, dark spots, light passivation stains are permissible. Stretch levelling breaks or run-off marks may appear.
Surface Quality B:
It is obtained by skin passing. Minor imperfections such as slight scratches, skin-pass marks, stretch levelling breaks, run-off marks, surface structure and light passivation stains are permissible.
Surface Quality C:
It is also obtained by skin passing. The surface shall be of homogenic property to enable high-class paint finishing. The reverse surface shall at least have the characteristics of surface quality B.
